I take a glance at currently airing shows now and then and they still can't match the pacing and cadence of this first episode for their premieres.

>the animation is really good
I think this is one of, if not the first, Kiyotaka Oshiyama's productions where he directed the full thing instead of just animating. And he's a big deal. Most recently he also directed and wrote the animated adaptation of Look Back. So no surprise there, Flip Flappers is what got him on the map.

If we're going 3 or 4 episodes, the 3rd one is especially a treat. It's just a shame it barely got noticed in its home market, I went out of my way to buy the JP BDs to support the release because I liked the show so much.

I'm well aware of how anime are funded and made, I usually never would do anything of the sort but FliFla is that once in a lifetime show that's an original (funded by Infinite for some merchandise or whatever) and that high quality. It sold pretty poorly by traditional Oricon metrics, but I wanted to signal my financial support anyways. And I'm certainly not giving my money to HiDive.

I buy too much merch personally, but I've never liked the BD sales model. They divide a show up into 2-3 episode volumes and charge per volumes prices that in the west that would be equivalent to a whole show over here. It's incredibly short sighted and only works because of otaku with access to their boomer parents bank accounts.

There's a future episode that'll clarify that in full. On another note the ending of the show is slightly contentious. It's still a good ending in my opinion, but the writer that wrote the first nine or ten episodes was swapped out for the last two for another one.

I like the eroticism of the show. There's barely any fanservice in shows today and what you do get is usually unnatural stuff about girls being caught half naked and freaking out or something which is silly

One reason I really like this show, shows like this aren't really around any more, where the animators are given funds to just cut loose.
>>176763 #
People don't like characterization but it's important for storytelling. So much media sucks today because suits read algorithmic data and demand that showrunners "cut out fat" and what not, and the result has zero substance. Like all of those big-budget "blockbusters" from streamers that nobody watches, even though they're "full of action, no talking."

>cut loose
Its something you only see when a new medium or field for art is around usually. Newgrounds in it's day while it had a lot of junk, you saw people experimenting with formats and material and it was really neat.
Nip studios still have people who want to experiment and play around with things whereas western animation is overly dominated either in imitation of them or by directives at CalArts. It's not to say people can't student productions which would get posted on youtube back in the day or even Disney shorts Little Matchmaker for instance all stand out in my head, its just western animation isn't treated seriously and what does exist is imitation of better materials.

Also had someone trying to convince me netflix animation is good and I watched an episode of dmc and it looked gross, shading and colour was awful.

You don't need characterization if you're making the same generic isekai adaptation as every other studio!

FliFla came out in a time where animation pipelines were getting more crystallized though. I'm talking about creative control, which isn't afforded often when you have to work on a property owned by somebody else, with an entire committee of disparate parties all making their demands. Mob Psycho by Studio BONES, even though it was an adaptation of ONE's work, for example had excellent production quality because BONES itself funded the production and thus had more control than, say, if they were working on Boku no Hero Academia and Gachiakuta.

>its just western animation isn't treated seriously
There are some popular zoomer shows like digital circus and hazbin hotel. The real problem is that VA work isn't taken seriously in the US, so the shows are brought down by people who can't act. Look at Avatar 3 last night, it's a billion dollar movie but the only good VA were Quaritch/Stephen Lang and Varang/Ooka Chaplain. Most of the cast can't act with their voice and it's not seen as a big deal by most people.

I've heard is good and is on my list.
>hazbin hotel
Was an advertisement for satanism and it brought out my contempt for those creatures.

>can't act
There's roughly less than 5 that can, and they're also typecast because of what they can do.
I also hear people justify and say they're good or good enough, but when you can discern good voice acting from other languages they're just awful.
It doesn't help they're also adapting nip material 90% of the time so correct pauses for effect and speech iteration doesn't make sense in English. The cultural reasoning gap not even minded because centerpoint for nips is different for burgs in context.

I've heard plenty of voice actors in games or other things who were good, I just don't think there is any focus on it, or they are relying on the recognition of a regular actor

I utterly despise the anime voice that you get in western dubs. Some of them can act like Troy Baker but the audience doesn't even want them to. They got used to anime style media sounding like that like how they enjoy choco tasting like vomit.

>digital circus
>is good
No. It's precisely a "committee" work where it's designed to tick boxes and pander. I would suggest Milky☆Subway, but...it's an independent JP animation.
Part of the problem is that CalArts poisons the well for any 2D talent that can come along. And 2D itself died in the industry because suits and executives hated the animators unionizing, so the only 2D shows that can take off have to be non-union. And as Smiling Friends shows, domestic pipelines don't even last long because there is so much pressure to outsource overseas, like Japan is starting to implement on a wider basis.
>>176776 #
Yeah, I would kill to have VAs that just...talked like regular people, instead of adopting an exaggerated affect because "it's a cartoon."
>>176778 #
Fuck it, why not. Everyone is enjoying themselves.
