As a replacement for animated GIFs that play and loop without sound, logically. Videos still have their place but they should have audio, since AVIFs are just video containers anyways. 4chan (or cuckchan, as I like to call it) put the stupid idea in everyone's heads that videos should be soundless because the software they refuse to update is ancient; they literally only implemented VP9 when crapple brought support to Safari, which should tell you everything about the demographic they cater to now.

Yes a shitty one. An AVIF is just an AV1 keyframe and is an inefficient image/gif replacement. jpegxl is better in terms of quality and filesize except for ultra small sizes.
>>176293 #
Anonymous
>>176291 #
>jpegxl is better in terms of quality and filesize except for ultra small sizes
Very much agreed, but why can't they coexist? I do online ecom for my day job and notably the image format we go with 99% of the time is AVIF now. And until JXL proves me wrong it's bad at animated and video content precisely because it doesn't support interframe. I personally see AVIF replacing JPEG and GIF in the future, while JPEG-XL becomes the new PNG, and people no longer have to worry about whether or not alpha is supported. Overall, should be a better and more media rich future if people understand the potential of both.
>Oh it's a business requirement.
Mostly PageSpeed and other metrics, so yeah. But again, AVIF is pretty much the new JPEG and JPEG-XL the new PNG (and much-needed, thank you). And I infinitely prefer both to dogshit WebP, based again off of VP9 which was a million times worse than AV1 and was pushed everywhere due to Gulag (JPEG-XL nearly got killed because dumbfucks in Gulag's office wanted to kill it and AVIF for WebP, as you can tell I take this shit seriously).

Isn't the ending literally the evil aliens are devolved humans and killing them would be morally wrong, so we'll just bury our heads in the hand and pretend they won't kill us after scrapping the mecha?
>>176405 #
Anonymous
>>176403 #
So one, they are evolved, and two, "space humans versus earth humans" is a cliche as old as space travel itself, nobody is haranguing Gundam about Spacenoids and nobody is tearing down Muv Luv for having the conflict be carbon-based lifeforms versus silicon-based. In any case, that wasn't the big central conflict of the anime.
>>176406 #>>176408 #
Anonymous
>>176405 #
People constantly shit on gundam for rehashing the spacenoid conflict and sunrise ignoring that tomino made it up as a pacific war analogy. Dunno about muv luv since I know nothing about it outside of schwarzesmarken but the earthnoid vs spacenoid conflict is superficially about colonies trying to escape a corrupt imperial center, who are the good guys akshually because japs have a fetish for the status quo. Gargantia has humans vs "human" alien beings that Urobuchi tries to moralize about.

Yeah, I can tell that you probably haven't read or consumed a lot of media where both sides are depicted as wrong. To make an analogy, the US and China both have their fucked up sides, but does that mean they should go to war and you should be conscripted into it and never question either side's propaganda? That's the message of the series in a nutshell.
>>176412 #>>176413 #
Anonymous
>>176411 #
>you probably haven't read or consumed a lot of media where both sides are depicted as wrong
I don't care if both sides are wrong, only one is human. Grey morality doesn't automatically make something deeper.
>That's the message of the series in a nutshell
From what I remember, one side tried to exterminate the other. Only one side can dominate the planet regardless. The humans end up effectively powerless and living in fear because the MC got the power of UNDERSTANDING that plagues mecha shows like a venereal disease, probably because jap creators didn't want to see the incredibly blunt analogy Tomino made between Zeon and imperial Japan, so instead they took the message of gundam as newtypes doing space hug.

>only one is human
I decided to rewatch the final episode, and now I remember why I really like the finale.
Urobuchi called out humans undergoing AI psychosis from neural networks' hallucinations more than a decade before venture capital would ever make it a reality, just like PSYCHO-PASS called out how globohomos would try to impose digital ID and mandated social credit. The final villain of the anime is literally a LLM gone rogue and calling itself SHODAN.
So it's wryly funny that the representative of the "last bastion of humanity" is a faulty algorithm misreading a prompt.
>>176512 #
Anonymous
>>176490 #
>So it's wryly funny that the representative of the "last bastion of humanity" is a faulty algorithm misreading a prompt.
I don't see why that matters tbh. The governing system might be wrong but it doesn't change the fact that the other side are evil pseudo-aliens.
>>176515 #
Anonymous
>>176512 #
So Gargantia concludes, "let them fight." Do people concern themselves with the DRC fighting Mali or whatever? No. But again, it's funny how people are supposed to look at the robot declaring itself a god, who admits outright that the human it's supposed to be serving is dead and is demanding the humans kill each other and that the planet be flooded, and conclude that it can be trusted to have humanity's best interests in its microchip heart. And the conclusion has the Gargantians get ahold of the technology, which they can reverse engineer into a new tech ladder while their "betters" continue killing each other in their forever war and stagnating.
>>176516 #
Anonymous
>>176515 #
The other robot honestly made so little impression on me that I forgot it even existed. The whole alien conflict is a dumb framing device that results in a (partly) dumb ending to make a dumb point. It's not like Urobuchi hasn't gone there before, the ending of the Psycho Pass movie is that Akane is okay with the Sibyl System because she's japanese and that's the status quo. The entire character arc of Makishima and the other one whose name I forgot exposing the fundamental problems with it is wasted.
>the conclusion has the Gargantians get ahold of the technology, which they can reverse engineer into a new tech ladder while their "betters" continue killing each other in their forever war and stagnating.
Assuming the "aliens" on earth don't kill them first...
