I don't know where I saw it but I watched a video recently that argued every generation of Trekk was actually just a mirror to the prevailing politics of the day. TOS was the cold war, TNG was the sixties, ENT was the 2000s. But that Voyager and DS9 started falling apart because they were trying to be still the same setting from TNG, but it was the 90s and it was obvious no one thought like that anymore. Now current year trekks are some sort of horrible abomination fusion of 60s utopianism with modern marvel morality and quips.
The correct modern Trekk setting would be a dystopia probably, the galaxy should blatantly be a shithole or the federation should be falling apart due to internal conflicts.

Going back to what's in the substack article. imo DS9 kills the federation pretty late in the series, but it's so thorough. The cynicism earlier on can be ignored but Sisko drops every single moral pretense of the federation in this episde and the result is starting the process of winning the war. It shows that the federations ideals are why everything has gone so badly up to this point, made worse by how heavily the episode tries to lean on real casualty lists to justify Sisko's decisions. The only difference between him and a Romulan or Cardassian after this episode is him being a nigger. Hell he's basically 1 to 1 with Gul Dukat except for the occupation leader bit.
